Travelling in Europe by Train: Train to travel in Europe

Travelling in Europe by Train

In this article, I discuss travelling in Europe by Train. Discover Europe in train with most exciting train travel destinations you can travel to in less than one week covering Northern Europe, Italy, Europe East, Spain and Portugal. Train travel is an excellent way to explore Europe – the continent is fairly compact and easy to travel. But the majority recommended train itineraries can easily travel by train, allowing interrailers only three months to make a trip.

Phone apps

It is a free online train scheduler app for every continent, the app version of the German Railway's online all European train schedules onbahn.de. There are also route plan information about trains and telephone points, although it must have an internet connection.

Travelling in Europe by Train

Railplanner is a free offline train timetable application you can get on a smartphone to find train times on the move without having to connect to a wireless internet connection. It was blisteringly fast covering nearly all the trains mapped by the navigation apps in DB. Everything's right!

To check fares & buy tickets in one country

You can view fares and buy tickets on national rail websites in any of the major cities in the country. Austria website – you can even use the Belgium site – Belgium trains are not required for booking and can easily be purchased.

Bulgaria Croatia Czech Republic Denmark website Finn website France website You can also use website Germany website - You can also use website Greece Hungary site Italy website (check the information about how you use it) or use a site or websites. Luxembourg.

What kind of Interrail/Eurail passes are there?

The interrail and the Eurail passes are available in different forms and can accommodate all ages. There will be a reduced price for the older age groups. Do you think you can get less money if you look young – unfortunately your passport number and date are printed on the ticket.

UK to Spain by ferry

Brittany Ferries offers excellent ferries to Spain all year round, which provide a safe route in the most stressful circumstances. Visit UK-Spain ferry web pages.

Do I have to buy an Interrail reservation?

You have the option to buy one of these. Those who don't make a reservation with their tickets will be contacted when their ticket is checked out. No one wants it, so take care of everything first!

Breakfast in London, dinner in Barcelona

No flying is allowed in Europe. It is quite easily and quickly to get a train from London into virtually every place. That is the tricky part of determining the proper place to buy a ticket. Seats 71 and above are in the picture.

This website provides the easiest way to reach the most important destinations throughout Europe, and between major towns in Europe. The book describes how to book tickets for your specific journey whether they are from London, Europe, United States or Australia.

How to Buy European Train Tickets

It is surprisingly difficult to find cheap tickets for Europe trains. It is possible to have a different national rail service in different parts of the world (many have a private network also) but all have different routes. The online tool is a good tool.

If you have your heart set on traveling Europe by train, plan ahead

When planning your Europe trip, it is likely that certain destinations are better suited to traveling Europe by train as compared to others. Train travel in Europe primarily suits certain West and Central European Countries–the further you enter the Balkans or East Europe the more restricted (and perhaps adventurous) it becomes.

Most train stations are in the center of the city

We consider it an amazing benefit for train travel within the European Union! Most airports (especially airports providing low cost flights) are far from the city centre, but trains usually are located at the heart of the activity. Walk past the Cologne station and you will see the Cathedral. Florence is just ten minutes walking distance from Duomo.

Train travel in Europe is generally far more comfortable than flying

Traveling to Europe by train is much easier than traveling on airplanes. It offers better seating and more flexibility. If everything else worked out, our personal preference would always be to take a train from Europe to a flight any time during the week.

Buying Tickets At The Station

It is possible to purchase trains at all stations—whether at the gate of the ticket or through automated ticket machines. Our recommended solution is to use automated ticketing machines because lines at ticket window are long, slow and insufficientlystaffed.

Free online rail maps

Start with this web-based rail map containing maps of Europe, which gives an overview of European railways'size. This is meant for passengers using an Interrail or Eurid pass, so it leaves out several routes from other non-European / Eurorail countries such as Russia and Ukraine and also leaves out some smaller routes in those countries.

For a greater overview, use the zoomable map of Europe (and indeed worldwide) railway websites on the Internet. You can view the entire European railway map online on Map Maps Traffic Image.ch. Click to see the details. You can also view a map of trains from an individual location on this web page. The best map (and official) of Britain's train network can be seen here.

If you have mobility issues, train travel can be difficult

It's difficult if one struggles with mobility to lift a suitcase or to carry it to an airplane. I think we had an unusual time in Germany when we had to literally run around to the station to get the connecting bus.

Other hotel sites worth trying.

This site is very valuable for travellers looking for independent reviews on hotels in different countries and regions around the world. I prefer to book hotels using websites like Hotels Combined (a search / comparison system for comparisons).

The website provides an intuitive interface, a good selection of hotels in almost all countries around the world, helpful online reviews for all hotels and decent prices, usually showing all the necessary extras including tax.

Commuter Rails/Regional Trains

Commuter rail is not necessarily a synonym for regional train. These are slower-moving train services that connect villages around a town (like Versailles to Paris) or train services that travel in one country or in a specific region ( like Siena or Florence in Tuscany ).

Most of these travel tips are applicable for the European trains, although they often lack amenities such as a snack or drink available for purchase if they travel fast or long distance.

First class versus second class train travel in Europe

Most European trains offer two classes, 1 and 2 classes. There are several options available on the high-speed trains of Spain and Italy for different budgets and comfort levels. In European trains first-class travel is usually significantly cheaper than second-class – First-class ticket prices can be up to a quarter of their value compared with the cost of purchasing it the following day. Alternatively you can purchase a first-class ticket and first-class reservations - either via interrail and eurail. Its prices are twice that of a second-class siblings.

High-Speed Trains/Long-Distance Trains

The train travels long distances across borders between cities (For example Venice to Florence), if the distance is longer between Paris and Amsterdam. Because every nation operates its own rail network with varying options of national and private carriers in addition, booking a ticket in different countries might involve a change in trains at a town in a city near the borders. The train we traveled to Venice from Paris to Venice took a French SNCF train from Paris to Turin, Italy, and took a train from Turin to Venice.

If you're traveling long distances, train routes can take a prohibitively long time

When we travel from Paris to Venice, a route we have travelled on the train, the train can take around 10 hours, and the flight takes about two hours. It does not even include getting from the airport or getting checked out. It does increase flight duration, it's a huge difference.

Exit the train quickly and smoothly

When you arrive on the road be prepared to exit immediately. Ideally, you should carry your bag to the stop to exit your train. Most likely people will start queueing minutes before arriving.

The train stops long enough to let all the passengers get out comfortably, allowing no need to go through other people. But if one is waiting until the bus stops to get all its luggage together then it could mean the bus is going on until it has departed and there are no passengers.

Find your platform

Often accompanied by a map or map, a map or guide will show you the destination and time. You should search by train number, company name and departure dates rather than the destination.

When the train is going beyond the stop it can be very frustrating to search for a destination. Trains in Europe generally use a time clock 24 hours per day, so 3 p.m. displays as 15:00 and the rest.

If your onward connection is an overnight sleeper train, or part of an epic journey

If you are using a sleeper train you can't afford to miss or making a connection part of a long series of interdependent connections throughout the continent, I'll give you an hour between trains and some more and plan to take a trip. Example one: You would take Eurostar & Thalys to Köln and connect to a sleeping train in Vienna.

The online travel planner suggests that an exchange time of 15 minutes. How much does it cost? Theoretically maybe, but as I'm not tempted by missing a sleeper I'm willing to spend a little longer, at least 60-60 minutes at the most. We can go to Köln to eat.

If you are connecting out of an overnight sleeper train

I've let the overnight trains arrive about an hour late to stay safe. The Istanbul to BucureÅŸti train is about half an hour behind schedule. Make the same allowances during the planning of the next connection.

Example: The train is scheduled to arrive from Cologne to Munich at 08:10. There are departures from Salzburg between 8:00 and 10:00. There are two low cost flights available that are valid for all trains that you choose. The internet and the European Railway Schedule predict 07:25. Are these connections secure? Sadly that's not happening.

Do you have a through ticket, or separate tickets?

The consequences of not getting into the correct train will be significantly lower with a pass-through ticket. I'm pretty sure you can get into this ticket through your web server. The system wont make you an impossible connection by booking a ticket through the system, you are certainly covered by international CIV conditions of travel. The CIV allows you to rebook to take the next train free of charge.

If you miss a Eurostar due to a delayed train

EUROSTAR has always remained quite good about re-booking passengers on the following Eurostar flights from Paris or Brussels to London, free of charge. Eurostar will avert people booking their trains from London to London on a new European-based Eurostar.

You must first have ample time for connecting. If you missed your Brussels connection from Eurostar to the onboard ICE or Thalys to Amsterdam, Cologne or Frankfurt, you shouldn't be worried.

Bring snacks and drinks along for the ride

Most long-distance routes sell food items such as sandwiches and snacks at their destinations. It is not uncommon to see commuter trains in cities selling food to passengers. Usually in long-distance train trains there's an automobile that you may come into and purchase and a restaurant cart might come to the station offering several things, similar to that of an airline.
